Mathias Johansen received his first rigorous musical training with Ekkehard Hessenbruch. He began his academic studies with Wen-Sinn Yang in 2005, which he carried on with Troels Svane in 2008. In 2011, he became a master student with Frans Helmerson at the Hans Eisler music conservatory in Berlin. He was admitted to the graduation exam with Conradin Brotbek at the Music Conservatory Stuttgart in 2014. His artistic development has been supplemented by master classes with David Geringas, Wolfgang Boettcher, Jens Peter Maintz, Daniel Müller-Schott, Gustav Rivinius, Daniel Müller-Schott, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt and Natalia Gutman.
Mathias performed as a soloist with the Lithuanian National Orchestra conducted by Gintaras Rikevicius, in addition to soloistic performances with the Berliner Philharmonic. He also collaborated with masters such as Antje Weithaas, David Geringas, and Kalle Randalu for various chamber music projects within a multi year scholarship of Villa Musica Rheinland Pfalz. He is also a much-in-demand chamber musician and performs regularly at various festivals, such as the Podium Festival Esslingen, Podium Festival Iceland, Chamber Music Festival Moteleon, Zeitkunstfestival, the Austrian Styria Chamber Music Festival, the León Chamber Music Festival in Spain, Musikfest Goslar, Festival Klassiek Zeeland. He has played in Steven Isserlis’ Open Chamber Music retreat in Prussia Cove. He played solo with the Symphony Orchestra of Vorarlberg as part of the Bregenzer Festspiele 2021 and will have his debut at the Schubertiade 2023.
As of 2016, he is teaching at the Stella Musikhochschule in Feldkirch, Austria. His students have won numerous national and international prizes level and have performed live on Austria’s national broadcast. As teaching plays a big role in his life, he dedicated a lot of effort into founding the master class „Feldkircher Streichertage“, which will take place in 2023 for the 7th time. It’s a place, where up to nine professors teach, a musician psychologist talks about ways to practice and perform, a musician fitness trainer helps to optimize biological issues and where chamber music between teachers and participants plays a huge role.
He has been giving master classes in Italy, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Japan, Iran, Spain and Türkiye.
